  4.     DIED. Harold ("Red") Grange, 87, artful, wing-footed running
  5. back (the "Galloping Ghost"), whose heroic exploits gave
  6. professional football its first and decisive respectability;
  7. in Lake Wales, Fla. Grange's fame took flight in 1924 when his
  8. University of Illinois team beat undefeated Michigan 39-14. In
  9. the first 12 minutes of the game, he took the opening kickoff
  10. 95 yds. for a touchdown and ran for three more; later he scored
  11. another touchdown, and still later threw a pass for a sixth.
  12. In the 1920s and '30s, Grange had a similarly astonishing pro
  13. career with the Chicago Bears, and also tried his hand
  14. variously as an assistant coach, sports broadcaster and movie
  15. actor (The Galloping Ghost), before settling down in Florida
  16. as a businessman.
